　昔、海辺を散歩するおじいさんがいました。彼は海辺に打ち上げら
れた何千ものヒトデと、そのヒトデを一匹ずつ拾っては、海に投げ返し
ている女性に出会いました。
「ばかなお嬢さんだ」
　彼は言った。
「全部救えるわけないだろう。こんなヒトデの山を」
　女性は微笑んで、
「そうね。だけど、この子は救えるわ」
　と言い、さらに一匹を海に返しました。
「そしてこの子も」
　また一匹、海に返しました。
「この子も」

ONE STARFISH

　Once, there was an old man walking along a beach. He came across
thousands of starfish washed up on the shore, and a young woman picking
up the starfish one at a time and tossing them back into the ocean.
　“Oh, you silly girl,” he exclaimed.
　“You can’t possibly save all these starfish. There are too many.”
　The woman smiled and said, “I know. But I can save this one.” And
she tossed a starfish into the ocean. “And this one.” She tossed another
starfish into the ocean. “And this one.”
